John Kelly is a character on the American police procedural drama television series NYPD Blue played by David Caruso. He was one of the main characters during the first season of the show. John Kelly was a detective with the New York City Police Department's 15th Precinct and was partnered with Detective Andy Sipowicz. He had a morally ambiguous character who dealt with personal issues involving his wife's infertility, a love affair with a woman named Janice Licalsi, and ultimately his own addiction to prescription painkillers. The character gained a lot of popularity and critical acclaim during the first season but was written out of the show after Caruso left to pursue a film career.
